There are several different ways to learn a language and one of these is by using a language learning software. A language learning software program has a lot of benefits that make it the most prized way to learn a language. You may be familiar with the several other ways to learn Spanish. These include but are not limited too personal tutors, college classes, Spanish textbooks, and country immersion. In this article, I am going to briefly explain why you should not use personal tutors, college classes, textbooks, or country immersion to learn Spanish and why you should use a language learning software. What not to do! Since antiquity, people have been learning how to learn languages by the word of mouth. We have come a long way since then and although tutors are still great resources to learn a new language they do have their downsides.

The main reason is because tutors are quite expensive to obtain! A typical Spanish tutor can cost a student between twenty and fifty dollars an hour. This is a pretty steep going rate and most people just can't afford those prices. Especially, when you are using a tutor two or three times a week. Another downfall that occurs due to the high tutoring prices is that you may quit your tutoring lessons way before you reach fluency. Ultimately leaving you discouraged and unlikely to pursue becoming fluent in Spanish at a later time. College classes are also inefficient ways to learn a language!

Some students may not be getting the material as well as others and as a result the teacher may reduce the rate at which he or she teaches the material. This will delay your progress and hold you back from reaching fluency. There is also the problem of class times and personal schedule conflicts. You can choose to take Spanish college classes online but that will really hurt your ability to learn how to pronounce the words correctly. Textbooks can be both great resources and bad resources to learn Spanish with. The answer is no! You are going to need a lot of materials to study and a lot of different resources to achieve your final desired goal of fluency.

Country immersion is also another way that a lot of people try to learn a language. This works for some people but then again it drives some people absolutely crazy. If you are serious about learning Spanish and you do not want any of the hindrances that you read about above then this paragraph is just for you! The best way to learn Spanish is a direct result of our modern technology. Today we have lots of different language learning software programs to learn Spanish with. These programs vary a lot in how they teach but their overall fundamentals are very much the same.

These programs provide you with all of the benefits that you can find with the other ways to learn Spanish that are mentioned above without any of their pitfalls. Due to the competition between language learning software program, language learning programs are constantly updating their software and providing new and improved learning tools to help you learn Spanish faster than ever. These learning tools vary depending on which language company you choose to learn with but in most cases they contain pronunciation tools, progress tracking tools, and personalized learning paths. Some language programs even contain language learning games. You will have access to customer service representatives and other great tools to help you learn without any hiccups along the way. These are just a few of the reasons why choosing to learn Spanish with a language learning software program is the right way to learn Spanish!

It's a fun idea. Learn Spanish while you watch Spanish TV shows online. Lots of people are doing it. There are hundreds of online sites that show all sorts of Spanish language TV these days. Here are some tips for making the most of your viewing time. Yes, there are plenty to choose from, and they are all different. Your goal will be to find one that is at a beginning level to start. That might mean watching a children's show first, or even watching one that features English subtitles. As you become accustomed to the speed of the speaking, and the accents, you will find that you actually can begin to understand single words, and then more and more phrases. This program is now available online, and it is actually a Spanish language learning program set in soap opera style.

It is actually entertaining, and free. You can also get transcripts of the program, so that you can study in depth. You can see local TV shows from various cities in Spain. This is a great way to immerse yourself in culture and to practice your listening skills at the same time. Community TV channels are an excellent source for learning about local news, events, and people. Often, people learning TV skills operate Spanish community channels. The programs feature community oriented topics rather than general news topics. Local people often create programs for local people. The advantage to linking into the Spanish community is that it gives you chances for local Spanish language immersion.

You will get to know your local Spanish community much better, and be able to practice your Spanish as you participate in local events. The classic Spanish TV shows are some of the best to watch because they give you a new outlook on native Spanish speaking people. Included in this category are historical dramas, historical romances, the best of comedy, and variety shows featuring excellent instrumentalists, singers, dancers, and dramatic performers. There is no reason to limit yourself to your online Spanish learning course when you can enjoy so many other online opportunities to immerse yourself in the Spanish language. So, sit down at your computer, and enjoy a show.

You must choose carefully when you are deciding on a Spanish language program. Because if you want to learn to speak Spanish online, the program you choose will be your primary tool. Choose right and you have every chance of being successful. Why do you want to learn to speak Spanish online? This must be the first question you ask yourself. And it is really two questions in one! First, you must ask yourself why you want to learn to speak Spanish, and second, why you want to do so online. If you are choosing to learn to speak Spanish online, you've eliminated some of the other choices.

You have chosen against off-line Spanish classes. You have chosen against a Spanish tutor. You have chosen against using textbooks. For most people these are good decisions. A tutor or classes limit your exposure to the language. They are typically one hour or two hours a week, and this is simply not enough, unless you also have tools to help you practice between classes. And the best tools are Spanish language programs. If you have chosen against books, again this is a good decision. Books are okay for exam preparation, but in terms of pronunciation, and sentence structure, they will not work - plain and simple.

The bigger question is why you want to learn Spanish. Are you preparing for a vacation? Are you wishing to use the language more frequently than that? Is it for work or business reasons? Are you simply trying to learn conversational Spanish? All of these questions will point you in the direction of the best approach for YOU! If the reason is work related, then you may need to develop a non-standard vocabulary of technical terms, or terms related to your business. If the desire is more social or pleasure travel related, then to learn conversational Spanish is your goal.

Which Spanish software program is best? This is also a very important question. The answer in part depends on your learning style. All of the popular programs do a decent job with vocabulary development. Most do a more than fair job with verbs and conjugation. But you need to take a look at how they teach these aspects, and make sure that the approach is appropriate for your learning and memory style. Typically the better ones will have engaging tools that make the process fun. How to learn conversational Spanish? The most difficult aspect to evaluate when looking at Spanish language programs is the immersion aspect.

How does each program do at simulating conversation environments? Do the tools challenge you to engage yourself in the conversations? Are the simulated conversations appropriate for your goals in learning Spanish? These are some of the questions to ask yourself. Choosing to learn to speak Spanish online eliminates the classroom environment. So another aspect of Spanish language programs worth taking a look at is their level of support for you. Do they have online forums where you can engage with others using the program? Is there a forum for getting help and asking questions? If you find a program with these attributes, then you have eliminated the downside of not having the classroom environment.

This study examined the effect of input device control and gender pairing on learner achievement and satisfaction when learners work in pairs utilizing level 3 interactive video to learn Spanish. Twenty subjects were randomly selected from 8th, 9th and 10th grade Spanish classes, and randomized into same and opposite sex pairs. Each group was asked to complete a series of 4 interactive video Spanish lessons during which 4 separate treatments were applied. These treatments varied the amount of control an individual learner had over the input devices during the lessons. These treatments included full control, no control, and unspecified control. All lessons were videotaped and a portion of these videotapes was used as part of the final analysis.Five individual hypotheses were tested.

This study examined the effect of input device control and gender pairing on learner achievement and satisfaction when learners work in pairs utilizing level 3 interactive video to learn Spanish. Another advantage is that you can determine your own learning speed, rather than trying to keep up with the rest of the class. The library can provide plenty of resources for learning a new language. The Spanish tutorials can be detailed in books, audio tapes/CDs or video aides. Correspondence courses are ideal for someone who does not have easy access to a computer or the internet, or prefers to rather work on paper. Some of the best Spanish tutorials can be found on CDs or DVDs. They have step by step lessons which you can listen to or watch in your own convenient time. Which method of Spanish language tutorials chosen will depend on the learning style that you feel most comfortable with, your available resources and your financial capabilities. Get the most out of the method you decide upon, by maintaining a positive attitude, and dedicating sufficient time to achieve your goal of speaking Spanish fluently.

The Burrito Bond is back. Mexican fast food restaurant group Chilango has launched its second mini-bond - dubbed Burrito 2 - with a promise of 8 per cent interest a year for four years on a minimum investment of £500. It is a mouthwatering rate of return but it is not without risk. The 11-strong Chilango chain was set up in 2004 by Eric Partaker and Dan Houghton, both former employees of tech phenomenon Skype. On Friday they had already raised more than £1 million. The proceeds will be used to fund expansion of the largely London-centred operation. On top of the attractive annual interest, there are investor perks of free burritos and guacamole.

Investors who spread the word through a 'refer a friend' arrangement get even more freebies. Depending on sign-up numbers, introducers can earn anything from a box of salsa, free online Spanish lessons or even a trip to Mexico. The firm's previous four-year bond was launched in August 2014 and paid the same annual interest. It raised more than £2million from 700 investors and met the interest payments on time and in full - plus investors were repaid capital. But wannabe investors this time around should not be blinded by gimmicks - however attractive - and do their homework. Mini-bonds come with a wealth warning. The high rates of interest are necessary because investors are vulnerable if the borrowing company gets into financial difficulty.

Bondholders are at the back of the queue of creditors if the company folds. Investing in just one company is also fraught with peril. The bonds are not traded on an exchange, making it tricky to access cash until the bond matures. Connolly says: 'The interest is attractive and would-be investors may feel reassured by the previous bond paying in full. But this is no guarantee of success second time around. Chilango has an annual turnover of just over £10million and in the last financial year ending March 2018 made pre-tax losses of £1.4million. But co-founder Eric Partaker says sales are strong, up 5.3 per cent so far this year.

Applications are open until 2 December. Another recent mini-bond - the Sanctuary Bond - has its eyes on philanthropists rather than foodies. The bond offers investment terms ranging from three to 15 years with the money raised to be spent on buying and renovating properties to let to the 'hidden homeless' - such as those escaping domestic violence. Issued by Equfund, a community benefit society, the minimum investment is £1,000. Investors can choose to either receive no interest or alternatively annual interest based on the Consumer Prices Index - calculated at each anniversary of the term. As a gauge the index is currently 2.7 per cent. Investors looking for an alternative bond which can be traded can opt for one from affordable homes group Heylo. The minimum investment in its ten-year inflation-linked bond is £2,000.

The best "learn to speak Spanish" learning programs often offer free downloads, learn to speak Spanish software and lessons, to teach you some Spanish and to help sell their products.
Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and has been for several hundred years. There are several means to learn a language and often the best of which is packing one’s bags and moving to a country where the language is spoken. Unfortunately, not everyone can do this. GOOD: I want to apply for grad school. BAD: Land on Mars. This list should contain the tasks (or sub-tasks) that you want to complete within the next 1 - 2 weeks. This list should be reviewed once per day or once every two days to stay on track. These items should be realistic and manageable with the given time-frame. Overshooting and being unrealistic about your goals here is bad because if at the end of the week you realize that you didn't meet your goals, it would have a huge negative impact on your motivation levels.

TIP: Items should be descriptive and specific. Don't overflow the list, keep sufficient amount of free time allocated for sleep and exercise. GOOD: Learn to make the special Sushi dish. GOOD: Complete the 'Basic Design Fundamentals' course on Coursera. This list acts like a temporary storage area for any tasks that are pending or any task that has an immediate deadline. Whenever you do a task that requires you to take some action after a small amount of time, add that task to this list. When you complete the pending task, just remove that task from this list. This list can be reviewed multiple times in a day. TIP: Be specific when listing the items.

GOOD: Wish happy birthday to Bob. The importance of this list cannot be understated. Use this list to document all the work that you have completed and want added to your achievements. Add to this list as you keep accomplishing the goals from your short term goals list. Keep descriptions short, yet complete. This will be your "master" list of achievements, and will easily let you add the correct and complete information to your Resume/CV at a later point in time. This list will also come handy if ever you plan to write your autobiography. This is a popular approach used by many professionals all over the world. There is an excellent post by Josh Tyler which describes this approach.

TIP: Try to write in detail, and don't forget to mention the date and/or time of the achievement. GOOD: Nov 15, 2014 - Presented a talk on "How to Achieve your Goals" at the National Management Center, New Delhi. GOOD: Oct 4, 2014 - Completed the "Design 101" course from Coursera and got a certificate of accomplishment with distinction. BAD: Developed new website. To avoid unnecessary complexities and distraction while working with the lists, I used a simple text editor called Sublime Text. I chose Sublime because it can open multiple notes in tabs inside a single window. It's more like the "Google Chrome of text editors". Plus, it has some handy shortcuts, if you take the trouble to look em' up. You can also use other online/offline note making services/softwares like Evernote, or something else that you like. I have all these text notes synced with Google Drive for access on my mobile and to prevent any loss of data. Jasdev Singh is the Co-Founder and CTO of Ubinext, a startup dedicated in developing custom cloud she hears herself. The 23-year-old Chicago native is so much more than the Latinx-songstress the media will peg her as; she is a healer, she is a lover, a giver, a full human being with a blossoming and stunning humanity. After featuring on Saba’s "FIGHTER" off CARE FOR ME, KAINA is finally stepping into the spotlight with her debut, Next to The Sun, which is nothing if not an invitation into her endearingly cluttered head. KAINA pulls out a chair for the listener, and we settle into the room of her doubts and hopes, we commune with her, and it is beautiful.

As she works through her identity, her depressive bouts, and learns to validate her humanity, we, too, learn something about ourselves. Next to The Sun is a top album of this year, of the past year, and of years to come within and out of the Chicago scene. There is so much to say about the wizened, thoughtful, and ever-so becoming KAINA, but I’d rather let her tell it. Our full conversation, lightly edited for content and clarity, follows below. DJBooth: Our readers love your voice, but they might not know who Kaina is as a woman. How would you define Kaina, the person?

KAINA: You’re starting like this, huh? I want to think that as a person… It’s hard for me to be "This is who I am as an artist," because this is who I am as a person. As a person, I try to live my life with honesty, and as you mentioned, vulnerability. Part of it is that it feels good, but also I can’t help myself. I can’t stop myself from digging deep into the things that hurt or feelings. I’m a big giver, caretaker, and healer. I truly care a lot. I am very intentional about who I am and who I interact with.

How do you make sure your humanity makes its way into the music? For me, it’s the forefront of everything that I do. If my intention as a person is to get closer to myself as a person and to understand myself better, then naturally, that will be at the forefront. It’s like identity; I can’t help that I’m a first-gen Latina, that’s what I was born as. Everything I create comes from that place. I feel very similarly about my vulnerability and my quest for honesty and validating feelings. In growing up and growing into my adulthood, I’ve learned that the most human thing is to be vulnerable and honest about all parts of yourself and your feelings.

On the LP, it just happened that way. Everything that people will hear is not a show. It’s my everyday life. I’m a young woman who thinks about things like love, but I’m also a woman of color who thinks about daily troubles of life. All of those things at once and all of it is real. I’m glad you mentioned identity because I feel like American media has just caught on to Latinx music. Talk to me about the importance of singing in Spanish. I don’t know Japanese, so I don’t know what he’s saying. He could tell me what he wrote about, and I could tell him what I wrote about. I thought there was something cool about being able to write in different languages and still being able to relate to what someone is saying.

I feel that way about my native Russian; sometimes it’s the only way I can communicate. There’s a whole range of emotions that aren’t available in English. Totally. I can even admit to not knowing that people in my community have been doing this stuff for a long time. After featuring on a major album like Saba’s CARE FOR ME, playing a major role in making "FIGHTER" a standout song, how does it feel to step out into the spotlight on your debut, Next to The Sun? I’m still in disbelief that I’m on CARE FOR ME. I’m the biggest Saba fan. I remember going to Saba shows when I was 17 with all my friends.

I would go to every single Saba show I could. I remember watching him perform at Do Division in Chicago, and it was pouring, and him being like "Who are you? You’re at every single show! " That’s a metaphor for everything that has happened to me in my life in Chicago and outside of it. I’ve always shown up for the things that I love, and it’s naturally worked out as peers or collaborators. Leading into my stuff is natural. Saba sat in on some of the early sessions of Next to The Sun, when I was unsure about it all.

"Waiting On A Day," he was there for that recording. "Green," he was there for the end of that, which is cool because "Green" is the last and newest song that I’ve recorded. I could ask questions. My 17-year-old self is in disbelief that I’m on CARE FOR ME because that album was my No. 1 of last year. Noname. We’re just honest people. We’re not scared of being vulnerable because we’re not an "industry city." All we have to offer is ourselves. It feels good to step into my own, and it’s natural. All of those things were happening to me. Saba was there when I was having doubts.

At my core, as a human, I’m all about being real and vulnerable, and I want things to feel more accessible to people, including emotions. There are a lot of feelings of isolation on this project, especially on "Ghost" and "So Small So Vast." It’s like this big room, and KAINA is just at the center of it. Where were you at mentally when making this record? Oh, Donna, you’re dragging me! It makes me so happy that you’ve said something like this because it’s been tough me for me to explain this project to people. Because at its core, it’s me in a room, telling you all how I experience my world.I was going through a difficult period.

I am a very positive person and, again, my intention is always set in really good things and good wishes for people. I want to be able to be a vessel for people to channel their feelings. When you listen back to my earlier projects, you can tell I’m young. I have so much love and good energy to offer. It got to a place as I got older, I realized it wasn’t sustainable. During this project is when I tried my first bit at going to therapy. It didn’t work out for me, because it didn’t work out, but it was my first attempt at opening myself up. So where I was at, you hear it throughout the project.

It starts with "House," which is a song about immigration, and it’s almost a prayer. Moving into "Ghost," I realize I’m frustrated and feeling stuck and feeling jaded with the world. How I simultaneously have more privilege than my parents, but I don’t have shit because of how the government is set up. The A-side is me being analytical and questioning things, and being mad and frustrated. The B-side of the album is me coming more to acceptance of allowing those feelings to live, and being honest about it. It ends with "Green," which is the destination point of my whole journey. Like, "Hey, KAINA, you’re allowed to feel all the things that you want to.

It doesn’t mean you’re fucked up, or anything. The whole project is about duality but also landing at a place like "Green," where you’re okay with the fact that there’s not a streamlined solution to your identity. For all the haze of the project, there’s power in it as well. How do you find strength in yourself? I’m a transparent person. This week feels scary and hard for me. And simultaneously, really beautiful. Part of this album and part of learning to grow up is learning it’s not healthy to think I could do all of this stuff by myself. When I need strength, I talk to my family, and I talk to my friends, and I don’t feel bad about spilling my worries. What does it mean to you, having this album out in the world for people to relate to? I’ve talked about this a lot, but I’ve told you: Everything that I talked about on the album is real. It’s either an emotion that I’ve made peace with or a situation that I’ve made peace with. In having this conversation with you, or with certain artists that I’ve worked with, that’s enough for me to hear you be like, "This is you in a room." I’m super ready to share that feeling with other people.

Spanish Bookworld already has a vast array of free Spanish learning material on their site. CD package entitled ‘Learn Spanish At Your Own Pace’, their ‘Spanish for Beginners’ cd-rom, and their three podcast series: ‘Spanish Podcasts for Beginners’, ‘Spanish Phrasebook on Podcast’ and ‘Spanish Vocabulary Flashcards’. But according to the creator of one of the world’s most successful online courses, almost anyone can learn anything—with the right technique. Barbara Oakley, an engineering professor at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, is the creator of "Learning How to Learn," a massive open online course (or MOOC) that’s already been taken by approximately 2.3 million students across 200 countries. My mom on the other hand was the second youngest of five. My dad (not really important to the story, but for context) is the youngest of four. Growing up I was seen as an independent soul that didn’t rely on people that much. My mom’s friends talk about how easy I was to watch as a baby because I learned to play by myself. Right before I turned 2, my first sister was born. Nothing major happened, but I wasn’t a attention hoarder so not all the attention on me didn’t affect me.

Every two years I would have a new sibling. So by the time I was 8, I was the oldest of five kids. I had learned at that point to be mommy’s helper. In school it was shown that I was a good student. So I was shaping to show that I was going to be the perfect daughter. When I was around 8, my best friend decided not to be my friend. This would start off a slow spiral, where I wouldn’t be a perfect daughter. I still excelled in my very small school. I was the top of the class and a teachers’ pet.

I was pressured to be perfect in school and at home. Because I was the oldest, I had to be the perfect example. This constant pressure was annoying but not overbearing. My social life on the other hand barely existed, because I had severe self confidence issues and was distant to my peers. The pressure only became a problem when I hit high school. I developed depression thanks to an abusive teacher and lack of socializing. My family, of course, didn’t notice the change. They did notice the sudden drop in grades. I went from a straight A school loving student to a B- average I hate school person.

My mom only noticed the grades. She thought I wasn’t trying hard enough. I definitely was doing my best in a class where I was constantly being verbally abused because I couldn’t remember what brown was in Spanish. Yes it was a Spanish 1 class. I had only spoken Spanish to say hello. So I had no experience actually forming sentences. I also have a problem forming words in English. My mom helped me find a Spanish tutor. I think in the back of her mind she thought I would get straight As if I could figure out Spanish. That didn’t happen but I was better.

I continued on in school dropping deeper into my depression. It got really bad in sophomore year. I began to self harm. I didn’t cut my wrists. I would scratch my skin until it was bright red, pinch, write horribly bad things I thought of myself, and sometimes I would scratch in the words with a Bobby pin. Still my parents didn’t notice or seem to care. I feel alone and that there was no point. I didn’t feel sad, I felt empty. I did have suicial thoughts. I ended up clawing my way out of my own dark hole. This was thanks in part to a savior crush. I eventually gained back my confidence and self esteem, but was still depressed. During this rocky time in my life, my parents were telling me that I needed to grow up more and that I wasn’t doing enough.

This only stressed me out more. The expectations of being the perfect daughter were driving me nuts. I knew I wasn’t perfect especially since I was suffering with my mental health. I also began to swear at school. I personally don’t like swearing, but when you claw yourself out a hole made by not fully knowing who you are anymore. I also began to experiment with makeup, music, and clothing to find out who I was. My mom didn’t approve me trying to find myself with makeup and clothing. Her reasoning was that I was looking too goth. I was wearing a dark gray shirt with jean shorts.

I undermined her a lot subtlety. I wore blue lipsticks school and listened to music with a lot of swearing. Both were meant to be me rebelling in a small, unnoticeable way. She found out about the lipstick, not the music. If she went my music, I would probably have my phone taken away. It’s gotten to the point where she has expectations on how my romantic relationships should go. She wants me to date a ‘gentleman’ who will pay for everything and ask me on dates. Let’s say that the guy I’m interested in is not that. I asked him on our first date. We paid for ourselves on that date. We went on a different date where I paid for the tickets and he paid for snacks. In my mom’s eyes, he isn’t shaping up to be the perfect boyfriend. So now I’m feed up with my mom. Advice would be great. Commenting on the situation would be great too. Anything funny would be appreciated.

People of Spanish-speaking origin with limited English proficiency is an increasing demographic in many U.S. This group faces language and cultural barriers that affect access to quality healthcare and patient safety. The best way to reduce these barriers is to promote direct bilingual interaction between healthcare professionals and their patients. My research supports this goal through the development and implementation of a Virtual Patient Based Learning Model (VPBLM) as a platform to promote second language learning in a complex Spanish for Healthcare Professionals program. The VPBLM features voice-recognition and virtual patient technical innovations along with student-centered learning strategies derived from the theoretical framework of engagement theory and the motivation-based design principles of Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction (ARCS) model. The results of my research after implementation of design-based research methodology show that the VPBLM offered value and motivation to students learning Spanish and cultural competency with implications for application across broader educational contexts.

You can find Christmas poems for free online at the Poems for Free website. If you are learning or have tried to learn Spanish, you know that at some point in time you hit flat spaces where your learning program slows down and your enthusiasm starts to wane. Don't let yourself get bogged down! Language learning can be and should be fun and exciting. This article explores some of the methods to liven up your language learning process, make it fun, exciting and easier. 1. Watch multilingual DVD's. Find DVD movies, short educational films, whatever interests you, that have both subtitles and voice-over sound tracks in both English and Spanish.

See for yourself the truth in the old adage, "You cannot translate directly (word for word) from one language to another, but you can express the same ideas and information." Get the "feel" and rhythm of spoken Spanish. 2. Get a personal trainer. Find an educated native Spanish speaker to tutor you. An excellent source is foreign students from Latin America who are studying in the U.S. You already know that they are educated, and as students they probably won't be as expensive as professional tutors. Put up a "Spanish Tutor wanted" notice on the bulletin board at your nearest University.

Note: Education level is important. Spanish speakers who haven't graduated from "Colegio" (high school) may teach you bad habits and pronunciation. 3. Read bilingual books, magazines. There are many good books and magazines published in bilingual format; one page in Spanish, facing page in English. This is another excellent way to get into how things are said properly, in Spanish, as contrasted to English. And you can do this while reading interesting stories and articles. 4. Spend some time in a Spanish-speaking country. Even if it's only a long weekend in Mexico, go somewhere where speaking Spanish is a necessity, not an option.

This is one of the very best ways to not only learn but get motivated. If you cannot travel to a Spanish-speaking country, try making friends with Spanish-speaking people who live near you.
The Marlins' English speakers are onto him. At the behest of CEO Derek Jeter, the Marlins last year began Spanish language classes for coaches, and the program has since been expanded throughout the organization, from media relations to analytics to the front office. Now minor league players who speak English are being taught Spanish, while Spanish-speakers learn English - part of a trend in Major League Baseball toward more bilingual teams. The Jeter regime's education program for minor league players extends beyond language. They're taught life skills and cultural awareness - an asset for youngsters hoping to break into the big leagues in one of the nation's most diverse cities. The Marlins are not alone.

About half of the 30 teams in the big leagues have begun offering Spanish lessons to English-speaking players in the past few years, says Major League Baseball vice president Paul Mifsud, who works with player programs. Miami Marlins minor league players Will Banfield, left, and Connor Scott take part in base running drills during spring training baseball practice Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019, in Jupiter, Fla. Banfield and Scott, both native English speakers, are taking part in a program offered by the team to teach players and coaches Spanish. Alfaro's T-shirt was worn in jest - he's bilingual, excited about his move to Miami and already a clubhouse leader. But potential cultural divides exist on any team, and the Marlins' education program offers a bridge. Gary Denbo, vice president of scouting and player development. The work our education department is doing affects everything in our players' lives. The better you know your teammates, the more you trust them," Scott says. "I think that's the biggest they're preaching here - trust. If you don't trust the guy next to you, how will you trust him to get the runner over, or trust that he's not going to run into you in the outfield?

Media captionLanguage app Babbel got a big boost when the makers of hit TV show Narcos suggested a tie-up. Eleven years ago, one of Thomas Holl's closest friends, Lorenz Heine, wanted to learn Spanish. Thomas confidently assured him that there must be several easily accessible online courses to assist him in this quest. But when Thomas turned to Google, the then 32-year-old software engineer was surprised by the sparse results. Thomas, who at the time was working on a music-mixing programme for DJs. But the journey from a loose concept scrawled on a wall of whiteboards in Berlin, to a global operation that works with the likes of computer giant Apple and video streaming service Netflix, was anything but straightforward. Thomas of himself and his three co-founders. Not one of the company's young masterminds had any background in teaching languages, and at first they simply tried to adapt existing course materials. Thomas, who is now the company's chief strategy officer.

Nearly one in six teachers starting in England's schools last year qualified overseas, according to official figures obtained by the Times Educational Supplement (TES). In the year to March, 6,179 teachers who qualified elsewhere had their qualifications recognised in England, suggests Department for Education data. This amounts to 16% of 38,746 teachers who gained qualified status that year. England faces a "major shortage" of teachers, said a head teachers' leader. Brian Lightman, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, which represents secondary heads. The overall figures on the number of overseas teachers who achieved qualified status in England last year are from the annual report of the National College of Teaching and Leadership.

The TES also obtained Freedom of Information figures on the countries from which these teachers came. Almost a third (1,851) qualified in Spain, 10% (610) in Canada and 9% (574) in Poland. The government allows teachers who qualified in the European Economic Area, as well as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the US to register their qualifications to obtain qualified teacher status in England. To be awarded qualified teacher status in England, applicants must have been fully qualified and trained in countries that are recognised as comparable teaching standards, said the spokesman. Teacher recruitment expert, Prof John Howson, a visiting research fellow at Oxford University's department of education said the UK's shortage of teachers was "beginning to suck in people from other countries where there's a surplus of teachers". Prof Howson suggested high unemployment in Spain and the need for Spanish language teachers in England could explain the large numbers of teachers from Spain in the figures.

After practice and lunch Wednesday, most D.C. United players headed home for the day. Others had meetings or media obligations. For three players and two assistant coaches, the next stop was a windowless, cinder-block room around the corner and down the hallway from the locker room. Each carried a textbook and, upon entering, grabbed a work sheet from a table in front of a screen and whiteboard in the middle of the room and settled at makeshift desks. "Hola, David," instructor Katherin Rodriguez said to her first arrival, David Ousted. The Danish goalkeeper responded in kind. Class was in session. In the morning, during the first physical workouts since extending its unbeaten streak to five Sunday against New England, United worked on combination plays and crosses at RFK Stadium’s training grounds.

In the afternoon, in the first class since last Thursday, a small group turned to conjugating verbs and understanding masculine and feminine usage of Spanish words. It’s common for newly arrived Latin American soccer players in MLS to take English classes to understand coaching orders, communicate with teammates and assimilate into largely English-speaking circles. It’s not common for the English speakers to pursue Spanish skills. But this month, at the urging of English-speaking players eager to expand their linguistic horizons in a sport with heavy Latin American influence, United introduced a Spanish class. "I was taken back a little, but in a good way," team administrator Francisco Tobar said of the request early this year by the wannabe Spanish speakers. Sign up for Dan Steinberg’s new D.C.

Sports Bog newsletter for Capitals, Nationals, Redskins and Wizards coverage. Expect weirdness in your inbox every weekday. The group, which has up to eight participants, meets twice a week for 90 minutes per session. The organization covers the cost, including the "Spanish Demystified" textbooks. Classes will run through September and might continue into October. The purpose is to improve communication with Latino team members — who, in most cases, have learned English to varying degrees through classes and tutors — and to strengthen bonds on a diverse roster. "The priority is for them to learn English," said midfielder Russell Canouse, 23, a central Pennsylvania native who is taking the Spanish class.

"But if they see some guys making the effort to learn their language too, it makes them feel more welcome and hopefully helps them want to learn English. "I can fit in with them better and they can see I’m trying. Because soccer is played professionally in most countries, locker rooms are mixing bowls of language and culture. With that global footprint, players typically speak several languages. Romelu Lukaku, the Belgian national team striker, speaks six, and during news conferences at the World Cup this summer in Russia, he and others from various countries transitioned seamlessly between questions in multiple tongues. Ousted is fluent in Danish, English, Swedish and Norwegian and knows some German.

He leaped at the chance to learn another. "I pushed for it. I asked for it," he said. "It’s an opportunity to communicate with guys on another level. Aside from English, Spanish is most prevalent in MLS. At the start of the season, 21.4 percent of the 637 players were born in countries where Spanish is the first language. When Portuguese is included, the total rises to 23.9 percent. The largest Latin delegations were from Argentina (23 players), Colombia (14) and Costa Rica (14). Five other countries were represented by nine players apiece. United’s 27-man roster features Argentina’s Luciano Acosta and Yamil Asad; Costa Rica’s Joseph Mora and Ulises Segura; Bolivia’s Bruno Miranda; and Venezuela’s Junior Moreno. Only Asad played in MLS before arriving in Washington. Acosta, who at age 21 arrived before the 2016 season, has made great strides learning English.

He knew few words before engaging in lessons and assimilating here; he’s now able to converse in English (though he is more comfortable using an interpreter in interviews with English-language reporters). Language was never a major obstacle for the coaching staff because Tobar, a native of Chile, and physical therapist Gabriel Manoel (Brazil) are on the bench during matches. Team coordinator Rory Molleda (Spain) is a constant presence, as well. Added Tobar: "In a quick moment, a coach wants to get a message across. An interpreter takes a little more time and is less personal. Ashton and colleague Nolan Sheldon are taking the class.

Other participants have included Stewart Mairs, United’s director of soccer strategy and analysis, and fellow Englishman Jonny Northeast, head of sports science and fitness. Ben Olsen, United’s head coach, said he attended the first class but hasn’t returned because of constant scheduling conflicts. Some of United’s U.S. Paul Arriola, were already proficient in Spanish. Ousted, 33, is seeking to add another language to his portfolio. He had learned English (with British emphasis) and German in school in Denmark, then picked up Nordic languages from teammates on Danish clubs. He was introduced to English with a Canadian accent when he joined the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2013. "It was a little confusing," he said, laughing. Canouse moved to Germany when he was 15 and, through his club, Hoffenheim, took language courses for three years as part of high school curriculum. "I had to pick up the language or I would be lost," he said. To retain German skills, Canouse practices with Zoltan Stieber, United’s Hungarian midfielder who played nine years in Germany, and speaks on the phone periodically with former teammates at Hoffenheim and Bochum. Three weeks into Spanish lessons, the D.C. Still, as Ousted said, it’s difficult to understand informal conversation and slang.

Catalonia's sacked President Carles Puigdemont has spearheaded the region's peaceful drive for independence from Spain. In defiance of the law and Spain's constitution, he has pushed forward in the hope of international recognition. But his zeal for secession has put him on a collision course with Spain's authorities, which outlawed the independence referendum held in Catalonia on 1 October. After imposing direct rule, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy called a snap Catalan election. But the result on 21 December was bad news for Madrid. The separatists won a slim majority, even though a pro-unity party came top. Mr Puigdemont said, calling for negotiations with the Spanish PM. He was speaking in Brussels, having fled there with four ministers after declaring independence. The election result proved that his campaigning via videolink from Brussels had worked.

But the village baker's son from Girona faces the weight of Spanish law if he returns to Spain. The separatist leaders are accused of rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds. Born in Amer in 1962, Carles Puigdemont grew up under the dictatorship of Gen Francisco Franco and was taught in Spanish at a Church-run boarding school, but spoke Catalan at home like others of his generation. Joan Matamala, a few years his senior at the school, remembers the boy everyone got on with, even the older pupils. Mr Matamala runs a bookshop, Les Voltes, that has been promoting Catalan language and culture in Girona for 50 years.

The young Mr Puigdemont did not come over as a natural leader at the time, but he was someone you did not forget, he says. As a young man, Mr Puigdemont had a passion for his native tongue, going on to study Catalan philology at the local university and polishing colleagues' copy when he first found work at the city's newspapers. Miquel Riera worked with him, often late into the night, at the fiercely pro-independence paper now known as El Punt Avui. Mr Riera. This may have fed Mr Puigdemont's awareness of social media, which was crucial in promoting the referendum campaign.

Mr Riera, whose 25-year-old son, he says, was bruised on the chest by a police rifle butt at a polling station at the 1 October referendum. Mr Puigdemont served as mayor of Girona from 2011 until 2016 when he was elected regional president of Catalonia. There is no denying his star appeal among his supporters, who clamour to take selfies with him at rallies and avidly follow his social media accounts, which he curates himself. Montse Daban, international chairperson of the Catalan National Assembly, a grassroots pro-independence movement. But in the eyes of Spain's government, the Catalan leader has ruthlessly created a crisis, burning all the bridges in order to make a unilateral declaration of independence. Madrid government source told the BBC. Reality Check: Would Catalonia be a viable country? Images of violence at the polling stations in October's banned referendum caused an international outcry. But the source said this was "150% part of Puigdemont's plan". Mr Puigdemont talks the language of independence in a way his more cautious predecessor, Artur Mas, did not during the dry-run referendum of 2014, which was also banned by Madrid. How can we explain to the world that Europe is a paradise of democracy if we hit old women and people who've done nothing wrong? This is not acceptable.

1. Catch on to patterns as quickly as you possibly can. There are many patterns in Spanish, especially in verbs. The better you grasp these patterns, the quicker you can learn as you can then apply it like a tool to various other verbs. For instance, the fact that some verbs with O in them will change to UE. Also, that not only words that end in O are masculine, but also ones that end in N or E as well. Quick tip, LONERS and DIONZA, words that end with any of the letters in LONERS are likely masculine, and words that end in D "-ion," Z, or A are likely feminine.

Although there are many useful patterns in Spanish, there are also a few key things that are just irregular. You just have to get used to them. Don't try to bully them down and figure them out so hard that you're incapable of using them, accept them to find out more. 2. See it twice, use it once, remember it forever. Vocabulary can be a tough thing for some and an easy thing for others. There are many, many different ways to learn vocabulary. Find what works for you. At some point, though, you're going to have to be able to pick up vocab without fancy flashcards or songs. Read. Use. Remember. I incorporate reading with conversation practice in order to excel quickly. See a vocab word twice, use it yourself in a conversation, and I guarantee you'll move a lot quicker.

This isn't shaming flash cards or all the other great methods out there, but if you find that it works for you, use it as much as you can. Learn a language. Make it your own. 3. Realize that sounds in Spanish are not the same as sounds in English. Just because it is the exact same letter or letter combination as English, doesn't mean that it makes the same sound. The "T" sound does not have nearly as much air to it as in English. Try to especially grasp the sound of "R" and double "RR," even if you can't make them yet, try to hear how they are different and are different from English. 4. Realize that there are a ton of accents, and some really are far more difficult to understand for a learner than others.

In the very beginning, I recommend sticking to something pretty standard such as Mexican or Colombian so you can get a good feel of what it's like to grab hold of a conversation. If you're feeling bold, try Argentina, Chile, and Cuba. Otherwise, if you need to understand a particular dialect, go directly for it. 5. Don't be afraid to watch something or talk to someone and barely pick up on what they're saying. Every single time you go to use or receive the language, you're learning something new. Even if you're just picking out words you already know, you're getting better at that. Use all of that to really focus and pick out new words to look up. You're always getting better at recognizing correct pronunciation, tone, and sentence structure. So go for it. Just starting to learn Spanish yourself? Check out my post on Everything you need to learn Spanish completely for Free.

The British are the worst in Europe for learning foreign languages, with little over a third of us able to speak anything other than English, according to a recent survey by the European Commission. But should we all be making a bit more of an effort to become at least bilingual, not just to boost our conversational prowess when we travel abroad, but also to ward off dementia? Several studies over the years have suggested that becoming proficient in at least one language other than our mother tongue is good for the brain, especially in terms of boosting recall, attention span and concentration. But few experiments attempting to prove it have been carried out — until now.

The aim was to confirm whether the learning of a language improved brain function. But the scientists running the experiment also expected to find that younger volunteers would fare better on the grounds that their brains have greater plasticity, which is the ability to form new connections and ‘rewire’ themselves in response to challenges. At the outset, each of the volunteers (half aged 18 to 30 and half over 56) underwent a battery of tests to analyse their memory, mental flexibility and ability to pay attention. For the next month, they took Spanish lessons for two hours a day, three times a week.

In between lessons, they were given homework and told to practise as much as possible. When the month was up, they were subjected to the same tests again. Although all the volunteers improved their mental performance, it was the older age group which improved the most. Share 486 shares As Dr Mosley told Good Health: ‘The results exceeded expectations. There is lots of research that shows taking up new activities, like learning a language, had beneficial effects,’ he says. ‘But I was surprised at the extent of the effect, especially in the older volunteers. As she explains to the study participants during the programme: ‘Without becoming perfect in Spanish, your brains responded very well and improved in attention tests.

But could the same benefits be seen with any of the other brain-boosting pastimes, such as Sudoku? ‘It’s a much bigger activation of the brain,’ he says. But should we all be making a bit more of an effort to become at least bilingual, not just to boost our conversational prowess when we travel abroad, but also to ward off dementia? However, other researchers question whether being bilingual really translates into a long-term reduced risk of dementia. This is because being better educated across the board means they have accumulated ‘cognitive reserve’, the formation of new connections between brain cells that protects against cognitive decline later in life. ‘There have been studies that found bilingual people are better at executive brain functions — such as planning ahead, or switching between tasks,’ says Dr Mukadam. She adds that experiments such as the one on Trust Me, I’m A Doctor, measure the short-term impact of ‘brain training’ exercises but not the long-term effect. Dr Mosley believes otherwise, saying: ‘Previous research suggests being bilingual means you may be less likely to develop dementia so it’s reasonable to assume any improvements will persist.

ROME (AP) - Migrants in distress at sea have told their rescuers that several ships passed them by without offering assistance, a European aid group said Sunday while seeking safe harbor for a rescue vessel with 141 migrants aboard. On Friday the group's chartered ship Aquarius, which it operates in partnership with Doctors Without Borders, rescued 141 people in waters off Libya. Of these, 25 were found adrift on a small wooden boat that had no motor and was believed to have been at sea for about 35 hours, the group said. The other 116 people, including 67 unaccompanied minors, were rescued later that day, it said. Nearly three-quarters of those rescued originate from Somalia and Eritrea.
Weblogs have exploded on the internet scene in recent years. They are among the technologies indicating changes in the way information is created, managed, and exchanged on campuses and offer powerful opportunities for online collaboration for both language professionals and learners. The interactive nature of this technology offers an enticement to spend more time working with the language and hence lengthens students contact time with the second language. While working on a weblog would not necessarily improve students' speaking abilities, could their accuracy with the language be improved over time? Armstrong, K. the intermediate subjects' reliance on the overgeneralization stategy was found to be significantly higher than that of the elementary subjects. These findings appear to be consistent with a theory which considers second language acquisition to be an actively creative process dependent upon a student's ability to assimilate and subsume new information into already existing cognitive structures. The overgeneralization and transfer learning strategies appear to be two distinctly different linguistic manifestations of one psychological process: reliance on prior learning to facilitate new learning.

Spanish Health Information Resources for Nurses. Abstract: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Spanish-speakers currently constitute 1 in 10 U.S. To provide responsible and responsive care, many nurses will need to develop communication skills for working with Spanish speakers and be able to find quality, reliable health information in Spanish for their patients and patients' families. The participants were intermediate second language Spanish (first language English) learners in the study abroad and at‐home contexts over a 4‐month period. The participants received grammaticality judgment tests coded for morphological class of the modified noun as well as attributive and predicative adjectives. Data were also collected on social behavior and language contact in Spanish and English in order to explain data outcome. The findings suggest that no difference exists between the two learning contexts and that social behavior and language contact abroad have minimal influence on acquisition rate.

213). Instructors were randomly assigned to either an IC or an in‐class presentational (CP) condition for lessons and accompanying assignments on 2 uses of the Spanish pronoun se. An attitudinal inventory indicated that learners in the IC condition rated their assignments significantly higher in terms of perceived comfort, enjoyment, and subsequent confidence in the material. However, regression analysis showed that ratings were stratified based upon several predictor variables. For measures of L2 knowledge, learners in the IC condition performed significantly better than those in the CP when identifying grammatical uses of the target structure on a grammaticality judgment test. No significant differences were found between the groups’ performance on a rule description task or a chapter test. Implications for implementing IC models are discussed.

The objective of this paper is to introduce Hypertext as an alternative paradigm in developing a full-scale Intelligent Tutoring System to the traditional Expert Systems paradigm that has dominated for years Intelligent Tutoring Systems development. This paradigm has been employed in the development of PEDRO, an Intelligent Tutoring System for foreign language learning. PEDRO - The Spanish Tutor is an Intelligent Tutoring System designed to assist intermediate level students with their learning of Spanish grammar, by testing their knowledge of regular and irregular verbs. This paper describes PEDRO'S architecture, functionality and pedagogical strategy. PEDRO has been developed using HyperCard II.

Situated in the context of learning second language (L2) pronunciation, this article discusses from information‐processing and pedagogical perspectives the role of repetitive practice with L2 input and of explicit focus on its form‐related (phonological) properties. First, we report the results of an auditory word‐priming experiment with 60 L2 learners of Spanish varying in degree of L2 pronunciation accuracy; these results suggest that both repetition and focus on form have measurable benefits for processing L2 speech. Next, we discuss these findings in terms of information processing and its relationship to L2 pronunciation teaching. Finally, we describe a communicative framework for teaching L2 pronunciation that is compatible with the outlined information‐processing principles, that is, a framework that includes meaningful repetition and form‐focused activities within a communicative context.

Spanish‐English bilinguals were taught academic‐type information about History, Biology, Chemistry and Mythology in their two languages. Upon testing, it was found that memory was more accurate and retrieval was faster when the language of retrieval and the language of encoding matched than when they did not match. For accuracy, the pattern of results was influenced by bilinguals' language proficiency, so that only balanced bilinguals whose high proficiency levels were similar in both languages showed language‐dependent recall. For reaction time, bilinguals were faster to retrieve information when the languages of retrieval and encoding matched than when they mismatched, but only for material encoded in Spanish. The influence of encoding and retrieval languages on error patterns was also examined. Together, the study's findings suggest that bilingual learning may be subject to language dependency and that experience with a language may increase the strength of linguistic cues in producing language‐dependent memory. The results are consistent with previous findings of language‐dependent memory in autobiographical narratives, carry applied implications for bilingual education, and are discussed within the theoretical framework of the relationship between language and memory. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley person errors usually involved third person forms used in first person contexts. The pattern of limitations of the children with SLI suggests that, for languages such as Spanish, additional factors might have to be considered in the search for clinical markers for this disorder. Implications for evaluation and treatment of language disorders in Spanish-speaking children are also discussed.

PURPOSE To make decisions about implementing systematic depression screening, primary care physicians who serve Spanish-speaking populations need to know whether Spanish language depression-screening instruments are accurate. We aimed to review systematically the evidence regarding diagnostic accuracy of depression-screening instruments in Spanish-speaking primary care populations. METHODS We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, EMBASE, and Cochrane Libraries from inception to May 28, 2008, for studies examining the diagnostic accuracy of Spanish language depression case-finding instrument(s) administered to primary-care outpatients. Two authors independently assessed studies for inclusion and quality. RESULTS Twelve studies met inclusion criteria. CONCLUSIONS For depression screening in Spanish-speaking outpatients, fair evidence supports the diagnostic accuracy of the CES-D and PRIME-MD-9 in general primary care, the GDS-15-Spanish for geriatric patients, and the Spanish language versions of the EPDS or PDSS for postpartum patients. The ultrashort 2-item version of PRIME-MD may lack specificity in US Spanish-speakers.

Over 800 Latino high school and college students in Chicago, Illinois, reported via a written questionnaire that they used Spanish 75% or more of the time with their parents and other adults in the family. However, Spanish use with siblings, friends, cousins, and their own children averaged just 45% and was negatively correlated with length of residence in the U.S. This combined with overall low levels of daily Spanish use point to a language shift to English. INTRODUCTION. The Hispanic population in the U.S. 58% between 1990 and 2000, climbing from 22.4 million to 35.3 million (U.S. Since approximately 40% of this population was born in Latin America, the nation's increasing number of Latinos is due in part to new immigration from Spanish-speaking countries.

However, members of the second and third generations constitute the other 60% of U.S. Latinos, and most of these individuals have learned English: Overall 51% of U.S. Hispanics claimed to speak English 'very well.' Given that high proficiency in English has been found to correlate to less extensive use of Spanish (Bills, Hudson & Hernandez-Chavez 2000) and the general tendency for heritage languages in the U.S. Spanish language maintenance is useful. The majority of Spanish maintenance research in the United States has taken place in the Southwest, New York, and Miami. Floyd's (1985) review of eight Southwest language use surveys published between 1970 and 1984 found evidence of language shift from Spanish to English, particularly among younger speakers. New York and Miami have also seen a good deal of Spanish maintenance research.

LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 12, 2013 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Bright Spanish, an organization comprised of a small group of Spanish teachers, is offering free six-week Spanish courses online. The classes are taught live in a video conference "classroom," where students listen to the teacher and participate in real time. The group hopes to make Spanish learning more accessible by providing interactive, guided classes that anyone can take regardless of their location or budget. Using PowerPoint presentations instead of chalkboards, chat instead of raising hands, and pop-up poll questions instead of quizzes, the teachers at Bright Spanish strive to make their classes feel and function as much like a regular classroom as possible.

Students can even turn on their microphones and repeat words after the teacher to practice their pronunciation. Each class lasts 45 minutes, and meets twice a week for six weeks. That’s nine hours of class time, and the Bright Spanish teachers try to cover a lot of ground. According to Bright Spanish’s teachers, the courses have been going quite well. "We usually have anywhere from twenty-forty people enroll for a class," said Anna Rasshivkina, one of the teachers. "Generally, about ten of them show up regularly to the class. Currently, Bright Spanish is wrapping up its second Beginner’s course, and is about midway through its third. WESTFIELD - The Massachusetts Nurses Association, a union that represents about 100 of Nobles 750 employees, is cautiously optimistic on the eve of Noble's purchase by the much larger Springfield-based Baystate Health. Paul Dubin, a 27-year nurse at Noble and co-chair of the nurses local bargaining unit. The Massachusetts Health Policy Commission is expected to approve Baystate's purchase of Westfield's Noble Wednesday at the commission's regular June meeting. It's the last of a long series of regulator hurdles and real changes at Noble which are expected to start at in July. Neither Noble management nor Baystate executives are talking specifics now, but Baystate has promised to keep inpatient care at Noble and to add specialties from its Springfield headquarters to Westfield operation. The purchase price has not been disclosed.

Noble and Baystate announced back in March that their boards were contemplating an "affiliation". The word "acquire" is being used now. Health care providers are consolidating across the state, said David Schildmeier, director of public communications for the Massachusetts Nurses Association/National Nurses United. Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates do not cover the cost of care. New payment systems encourage providing quality health care to populations and preventative care, not payments based on procedures or tasks performed. All this makes it tough for independent hospitals and encourages operators to seek out economies of scale. In September 2014, Baystate took over Wing Memorial Hospital in Palmer from the UMass Memorial System.

Northampton's Cooley Dickinson affiliated with Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital in 2013. Partners HealthCare, of which Mass. General is a part, also has plans to take over Harbor Medical Associates on the South Shore. Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington recently bought hospitals on the north shore. The wave of mergers means that only Holyoke Medical Center will remain as an unaffiliated hospital in Greater Springfield. The union's contract with Noble, which won't expire until March 2016, has a successor clause meaning Baystate must honor it, Schildmeier said. Baystate's relationship with the Nurses Association suffered during contract talks at Baystate Franklin in Greenfield which were settled in 2014. But things are improving in recent years. Dubin said he met with union-member nurses from both Baystate Franklin and Baystate Mary Lane in order to learn more about the current working relationship.

He came away satisfied of a cooperative environment. North Adams Regional Hospital, which had 121 beds, shut down abruptly in March 2014, leaving 40,000 residents in northern Berkshire County without access to a local hospital and 500 people out of work. Westfield is more prosperous than hard-hit North Adams, Schuildmeier, a Westfield State University alum, said. But Westfield has its challenges, the union told the State Department of Health at a recent hearing concerning the purchase. Westfield has 40,000 residnets and there are thousands more in surrounding towns. There are 8,000 people aged 60 or more in Westfield. Westfield also has a growing population of immigrants including Nepali refugees and those of Iraqi, Afghan, Burmese and Ukrainian origins, the union said. There is a growing population of Spanish speakers as well.

More than 25,000 patients visit Noble's emergency department each year, and they average over 4,000 inpatient discharges and 44,000 outpatient visits each year. Documents on file with the Massachusetts Attorney Generals Office show that Noble has been struggling. 12.69 million in 2012, the most recent document available. Baystate Health has a total of 11,500 employees at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Baystate Mary Lane in Ware, Baystate Franklin in Greenfield, Baystate Wing in Palmer and other assorted operations. Of those, 6,100 work in Springfield, the 761-bed hospital that also serves as Western Massachusetts' only Level 1 Trauma Center, and has the second-busiest emergency room in all of Massachusetts.

Learning a new language can be a fun and rewarding experience. How long it takes to learn a foreign language depends on your proficiency level in the language you want to study. There are many choices available as to which foreign language to take. Let your mind explore the many possibilities that a class in Arabic, Portuguese or Chinese can offer. Tampa Language Center offers classes in Italian, German, French, Arabic, Portuguese and Spanish. The center offers private lessons for both adults and children. All foreign language classes provide the vocabulary and speaking skills necessary to communicate with others in the foreign language. Students will learn to read, write and speak in the foreign languages offered at the Center.

Prices vary by private, semi-private and group classes. 60. Courses are 16 hours/units long. Longmen Chinese Language Center teaches Mandarin Chinese, Zhuyin or Pinyin language classes. Private classes, in-home tutoring and small group classes of four to 10 students are all offered at the language center. The center offers Mandarin classes for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Culture lessons are integrated into the classroom curriculum so that students are not just learning to speak and write the language, they are also learning about the culture of the language and the people. Apex Language Center has been in the business of teaching foreign languages for eight years. Classrooms are designed for a maximum of six students per class and each class is offered in a home-like setting.

The center’s instructors have a combined total of over 60 years of teaching foreign languages. Apex Language Center offers placement in private family residences near the school for those who live out of town. Care will be made to place students who require housing into a home with families who speak the language the student is studying, thereby helping the student to get practice speaking the language in real-life situations. The Italian American Society of St. Petersburg offers free Italian classes every Thursday from September through May. The 6 p.m. class covers elementary grammar as well as both intermediate and advanced conversation.

There’s a big difference between leveling up in a language learning app and being able to speak and understand your target language when you arrive in a new country. Rather than wondering which app or approach is "best," consider studying your language from multiple directions. Duolingo is free, has a ton of material, and works well for a lot of people—so it’s a natural first step. Mango takes a more conversational approach, and while it’s a paid product, many publiclibraries can give you access for free. Babbel is another paid app with a conversational focus. When I’m studying a language, I like to dip in and out of the other strategies I’ll mention, but I like to have one approach that I check in with every day.

For me, that’s usually Duolingo. If you only practice the written language, it’s very difficult to understand speech (especially from native speakers who may speak quickly and who may have a regional accent you’re not familiar with). There are tons of podcasts in nearly every language, but the problem is finding ones that you can understand as a beginner. Duolingo’s Spanish podcast bridges the gap in a really nice way: a Spanish speaker tells a story about something that happened in their life, and every few sentences the English-speaking host takes over and provides some context. You can follow the story without getting lost, but the more Spanish you can understand, the more details and flavor you can pick up. Notes in Spanish and SpanishPod101 both do this well.

This might be the scariest option at first, but it’s also probably the most helpful. I found beginner groups where most of the conversation is in English, and intermediate and advanced groups where people just hang out and chat in the target language—sometimes over a meal, or after a foreign-language movie. Since the group is intended for people who are learning the language, it’s fine to show up even if you aren’t confident in your skills. People will help you! I also found my conversation group to be a great place to learn about books and apps that I could practice with at home.

A video chat may, again, be kind of terrifying. But when people who speak your language are literally a Skype call away, all across the world, it would be a shame to miss out on this extremely helpful way of learning. Italki can match you with either a professional language teacher or an informal tutor or partner for an hourly fee. Duolingo also offers a live chat in some languages, where you spend about five minutes going through a semi-scripted encounter with the teacher on the other end. For an even more informal (and less intimidating) option, Tandem lets you connect with other language learners for free. You just open up the app and text a stranger. Video chat and other options are available as well.

Don’t watch any just any TV show in your target language; many will be hard to understand. Seek out shows whose premise you can follow while practicing your listening skills. For example, if you’re familiar with the baking show Nailed It, try Nailed It Mexico, where the structure is exactly the same (people try to bake cakes, and fail) so you never have to worry about losing the plot. I learned from a recent episode of The Fluent Show (an all-English podcast about language learning in general) that some of the best shows for language learners are ones that are extremely formulaic, like reality shows and true crime dossiers.

When we asked for your language learning tips, some commenters mentioned the Extra! American students learning various foreign languages. For practice reading and writing small snippets of your target language, find accounts or hashtags on social media to follow. You’ll get a little dose of that language every time you scroll Instagram, plus you’ll get a tiny window into the culture by seeing what the country looks like, what people are doing, what news they’re discussing. It’s also a fun, easy, low pressure language exercise to leave a comment or reply every now and then, letting you put your new language skills to use in the real world without having to leave home.

The EU-EBM curriculum presented in this paper targets postgraduate training and continuing education, using a clinically integrated e-learning methodology. To our knowledge, clinically integrated teaching of EBM is currently not provided in Europe. The main purpose of the curriculum is to provide doctors with the basic skills needed to practice and implement evidence-based therapy. CD-Rom ensures timely and immediate access to the necessary methodological knowledge and background materials. A distinct feature of the EU-EBM curriculum is the low threshold approach to facilitate integrated EBM teaching and thereby addressing specific problems of the target group. Teaching basic concepts in short learning units and allowing maximum flexibility in the location of the learning takes into account the timeframe and working patterns of busy clinicians.
